3 Bits periodically provides three bite-sized items of interest about climate news and information.
- Johnson & Johnson. Most recently in the news for producing the single-dose COVID-19 vaccine, Johnson & Johnson is a leading producer of a portfolio of consumer brands such as Tylenol, Aveeno, Neutrogena, and baby shampoo, among others. While the proof will be in the pudding, the company has a stated goal of bringing its current 35% renewable energy level to 100% by 2050. J&J has also committed to achieving 100% recyclable/compostable/reusable packaging by 2025. Johnson & Johnson is one of 277 companies to make CPD’s “A List” for its climate change disclosures, targets, and investments.
- Microsoft. Surprised? We were, too. But Microsoft has plans in place to use a 100% renewable energy by 2025 and be carbon negative by 2030. They are also developing AI tools – eventually to be made available to its customers – that reduce carbon emissions and lessen the environmental impacts of farming, among other initiatives. Microsoft joins J&J on the CPD “A List”.
- Not There Yet: Costco and Netflix. Greenwashing designed to appease critics and boost shareholder value is, unfortunately, still a factor among some of the world’s largest companies. Costco and Netflix have both made public commitments to climate action but neither company has yet disclosed their actual targets or invited data collection and reporting for their programs. While it is expected that both companies will eventually publish targets and work with organizations such as CPD, they have not yet put their proverbial stakes in the ground. Let’s hope they get religion and follow-through on their commitments.
