- 3 Bits periodically provides three bite-sized items of interest about climate news.
- Mayors on the Move. C40 Cities (C40), a network of the world’s “greatest”, and presumably largest, cities is actively working to identify and implement sustainable solutions for urban areas to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. McKinsey & Company, citing the United Nations and C40, reminds us that by 2050 68% of the world’s population will reside in urban areas and, because 90% of urban areas are coastal cities, they are particularly vulnerable to the environmental risks associated with climate change such as flooding, rising sea levels, and other climate related threats. In their C40 Cities Leading The Way report, they highlight seven cities and their programs including Barcelona (climate justice, citizen action), Copenhagen (carbon neutral by 2025), London (zero carbon public transport, clean air), New York (accelerating action), Oslo (implementing climate budgets), Paris (carbon neutral by 2050), and Stockholm (fossil fuel free by 2040). - Oh, Morgan. In the super-local department, a commercial real estate developer in Boulder, CO, Morgan Creek Ventures, was not satisfied with just having rooftop solar panels on their Boulder Commons Phase Two project, so they partnered with Pivot Energy, Coburn Architecture, and others to create a vertical array of solar panels to capture additional solar energy. Morgan Creek states that over the next two decades the project will save the equivalent of 4,384 tons of CO2 which they estimate to be the same as taking 953 autos off the road. - Nestle Steps Up on Regenerative Ag. Nestle announced that it is investing $1.29 billion in regenerative agriculture, working with its 500,000 farmers and 150,000 suppliers to reduce its carbon emission in by 50% by 2030 and be net zero by 2050. About two-thirds of Nestlé’s total emissions come from agriculture based activities. (Source: Food Dive)
